I want to be a kind and humble reminder of what hard work and dedication can lead to. Achieving a college degree will mean I can tell myself, that I, Allan Lei, have successfully jumped over the hurdles that once brought me down. Monica Higgins Huiting Lei June Jordan School for Equity Will attend Mills College Donor: Dodge & Cox Thurgood Marshall High School Will attend UC Merced Donors: Rachel Ratliff, Shelli Semler & Kyle Bach, Heather & Paul Sterner, Nikki Stoddart, Katherine Young & Chris Cox In learning more about the issues in my community and society, I have developed my critical consciousness. This awareness has helped me take the lead to create change. My parents only finished middle school, and they do not have any work training or basic English skills. I want to improve my parents’ lives through higher education. I know the significance of education, so I want to be a teacher. My teachers taught me not just book knowledge and skills, but also an outlook on life and morality. This feeling motivates me to continue learning for years to come. I hope that my efforts will inspire youth from my community and beyond to pursue higher education despite barriers. My plan for the future is filled with a constant cycle of learning, personal growth, and positive change.
