As the elder sister of three other
kids, I know it is my responsibility to
carve a path and become an example.
I want to be a kind and humble
reminder of what hard work and dedication
can lead to.
Achieving a college degree will mean I
can tell myself, that I, Allan Lei, have
successfully jumped over the hurdles that once
brought me down.

In learning more about the issues
in my community and society, I
have developed my critical
consciousness. This awareness has
helped me take the lead to create
change.
My parents only finished middle
school, and they do not have any work
training or basic English skills. I want to
improve my parents’ lives through higher
education.

Knowing the challenges I have
gone through has taught me that
with a college degree—as well as
hard work and dedication—I can
achieve all of my goals.
I know the significance of
education, so I want to be a
teacher. My teachers taught me not
just book knowledge and skills, but
also an outlook on life and morality.

My favorite part of school, which
drives me to wake up at 5am each day,
is the ecstatic feeling of gaining
knowledge. This feeling motivates me to
continue learning for years to come.
I hope that my efforts will inspire
youth from my community and
beyond to pursue higher education
despite barriers. My plan for the future
is filled with a constant cycle of learning,
personal growth, and positive change.
