It is a land of contrasts and variety. The infant Mekong River emerges from the snow-capped mountains of Tibet as it enters Yunnan and exits into the tropical forests of Laos. More than half of China’s fifty-six minority groups live in Yunnan, and because of its biological diversity, Yunnan is known around the world as “The Mother of Gardens”. It is a glorious place, a riot of colors and tastes, and the source of the legend of Shangri-La. Today, in the modern capital of Kunming, its seven million inhabitants consume 300 tons of a gluten-free rice noodle called mixian every single day. Mixian is the bedrock of Yunnan cuisine, the base for dishes from soups to desserts, prepared in almost endless variations throughout the province. It is the base for our entrees, a slippery, light and almost fluffy noodle, taking flavor from its sauces, toppings and broths. It is the people’s soul food at home, and for those travelling away from Yunnan their comfort food. We provide traditional Yunnan flavors with a contemporary take on presentation, along with many small plate and vegetarian offerings. Zongmin grew up in Kunming, loving mixian and missing it terribly when away from home. We love Alexandria and enjoy sharing mixian with our neighbors, people from Yunnan and other Chinese in the DC area. If you have not tried our noodles yet, please make sure you stir your bowl thoroughly before eating. Feel free to pile your noodles onto your large wooden spoon and slurp them from there. Don’t be shy – slurping is authentic, as is drinking down the last of your bowl. Relax and enjoy your mixian!
