I joined the faculty at Utah because of the excellent research reputation of the Department of Chemistry, but I’ve stayed for 30 years because of
the great students I teach.
I strive to bring the thrill of scientific discovery into the classroom whether teaching at the first-year or graduate level. Ultimately success in
this endeavor is measured by the accomplishments of students. I have shared the Nobel Laureate Signature Award in Graduate Education with
a former Ph.D. student, and former undergraduate research students in my lab have gone on to graduate and professional study at the top
institutions in the country.
Utah is indeed “The Place” to combine rigorous research and study with the great outdoors. Be an aggressive student to take advantage of the
diverse opportunities beyond the formal classroom on campus.
