The first welcoming “community” encountered is an area known as South County. It features a variety of lifestyles from horse property to vineyards, golf course homes and neighborhoods within a gated community. An early settler was Michael Higgins, an Irish immigrant who came to California in 1852. At first he was a miner, and then in 1860 moved to the southern part of what would become Nevada County.
