STONE MONUMENT THAT READS “Welcome to Nevada County” extends a greet-
ing to visitors traveling up Hwy. 49 from Auburn. The first welcoming “community”
encountered is an area known as South County. It features a variety of lifestyles
from horse property to vineyards, golf course homes and neighborhoods within a
gated community.
An early settler was Michael Higgins, an Irish immigrant who came to California in
1852. At first he was a miner, and then in 1860 moved to the southern part of what
would become Nevada County. Here he farmed and raised stock, and was owner
of a popular hotel.
