evada County is filled with vintage
homes from stately Victorians to
modest cottages dating from the
early mining days. You may own one and
been curious to know something about your
piece of local history.
When was it built? Who lived in it? Is it
haunted? The volunteers at Searls Historical
Library may be able to answer the first two, as
for the third, not so much. They deal in facts.
It can be difficult playing house detective,
so the more you know regarding location
of your home or even the name of a
previous owner, the better. Come armed
with information such as lot and block, or
township range and section.
The type of material found at Searls
Library includes maps from the 1800s. There
are also old phone books, directories of

Other resources include Nevada City
assessor records, and hundreds of county
assessor ledgers from the 1860s to 1960. The
early ones include details about personal
property such as jewelry, furniture and
cattle–a great window into the lifestyle of
local pioneers.
Searls Library concentrates on the history
of Nevada County and the Gold Rush. It has
collected and catalogued 22,000 photographs.
Also available for research are original
documents, newspaper clippings and books.
On your visit to the library, you will also
be able to see furniture from the Searls Law
Firm dating from the 1800s. Niles Searls
was chief justice of the California Supreme
Court. His son Fred specialized in mining and
