Eliminating the Cancer Burden
The University of Colorado Cancer Center is recognized by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive, consortium cancer center, one of only a handful of consortium centers recognized by the NCI. As a consortium, the CU Cancer Center represents the unified basic, translational and clinical cancer research effort benefiting all citizens of Colorado. It comprises three universities, three medical centers, and one health maintenance organization.
On August 6-9, 2017 the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) convened in Boston, MA, for their annual meeting. There was a great presence in the exhibit hall of individuals educating the legislators and advocating for life-saving policies at the Radon Leaders Saving Lives booth which consisted of members of Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD) American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST), EPA, Kansas State University, Citizens for Radioactive Radon Reduction (CR3), American Lung Association (ALA), and Cancer Survivors Against Radon (CanSAR).
Follow-up communication will be made with our legislator visitors expressing our appreciation for their time and offering assistance with their plans and questions concerning how they can enact policies that will help save lives and prevent radon-induced lung cancer.
Next year the NCSL conference will be held in Los Angeles, CA, and in 2019, Nashville, TN. Radon Leaders Saving Lives will be there! Thanks to all who have made our efforts successful.

For the last 9 years, Radon Leaders Saving Lives has provided state fact sheets with data on radon levels, and pertinent information on radon reducing polices that have been enacted in states throughout the nation. An outstanding banner display outlined the booth which could be seen as everyone approached the exhibit hall bringing Radon in focus for all attendees. Great conversations were held with well over 100 legislators concerning radon gas exposure prevention policies and well as a general explanation of what radon gas exposure is, what it can do, and where it can be.
Coupons for free radon test kits were provided by ALA and a radon mitigation fan was on display which was provided by Spruce Environmental to illustrate the mitigation system that can be installed to reduce radon levels in homes and workplaces.
