INNOVATIVE DISASTER PREPAREDNESS TRAINING OSTEOPATHIC HERITAGE FOUNDATION PRIMARY CARE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP CREATED WITH $5.4 MILLION FROM OHF AND $2.5 MILLION FROM THE HERITAGE COLLEGE OHIO’S PREMIER OSTEOPATHIC CME EVENT STUDY ABROAD IN CUBA More than 800 physicians, medical students and health care professionals gathered in Columbus in April for five days of educational sessions on some of the state’s most pressing health care topics during the 2017 Ohio Osteopathic Symposium. The event, conducted jointly by our college and the Ohio Osteopathic Association, aims to advance the health of patients and prepare physicians to lead the transformation of primary care. In a new study abroad program supported by Ohio University’s Global Health Initiative, Assistant Professor of Health Policy Dan Skinner, Ph.D., led a contingent of 12 OHIO students – medical students as well as students in nursing, physical therapy and other health-related fields – on a learning trip to Cuba. The group learned about Cuba’s community-based health care model, which puts a great emphasis on primary care. DAN KRAJCIK, M.B.A, OMS IV National Chair Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents Our students saw firsthand what it’s like to respond to a mass casualty situation when the Emergency Medicine Club at the Heritage College, Dublin, hosted its first-ever Disaster Day. Through this event, students learned about triage techniques, disaster scene safety and mass casualty management before applying what they had learned through two disaster simulations – a structural collapse and a school shooting. This training was made possible by event sponsors Mid-Ohio Emergency Services, OhioHealth and Washington Township Fire Department.
