December 2017 Dear Friends, This report celebrates achievements by our students, faculty and staff over this past year. We are so proud of the many national recognitions received, the accomplishments of our academic and community health programs, the notable research conducted by our faculty and students, and much more. Please enjoy these inspiring stories! But some of our greatest efforts in 2016-2017 were in laying the groundwork for transformational changes ahead: • Developing two new curricula that launch in August 2018, the Pathways to Health and Wellness Curriculum and the Transformative Care Continuum demonstration project. • Creating our next strategic plan for 2018-2021, which continues the excellent work started with our 2015-2017 plan. • Planning for our new Athens campus, set to open in 2021, and growth at our Dublin and Cleveland campuses. • Positioning ourselves to launch our new Office of Inclusion in 2017-2018. • Advancing our shared governance initiative, launched jointly last year by our elected faculty and me to gain a clearer understanding of faculty roles in college decision-making and to focus on more inclusive, transparent decision-making processes. FROM THE EXECUTIVE DEAN This year marked a major milestone for me, as well, as I celebrated my fifth year as executive dean of the Heritage College. My predecessor, Jack Brose, D.O., had been an incredibly skilled and effective leader who set the college on the course of transformation that continues today. In 2017, our college remains focused on training primary care physicians and other physician specialists who are prepared to address the most pervasive medical needs in the state and the nation. However, we are a very different medical school today than we were in 2012, with two additional campuses; a class size that has doubled; a 32 percent growth in the number of faculty; new and expanded academic, research and community health programs; and evolution throughout the organization to make these changes possible. I am deeply grateful to the many alumni, friends and organizations who make our physician training, research advancements and community services possible. And of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our major benefactor, the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our success. KENNETH H. JOHNSON, D.O., FAAO EXECUTIVE DEAN 02
