The OHF and the Heritage College both have their roots in Doctors Hospital, which was among the many organizations
that advocated for establishing an osteopathic medical school in Ohio during the early 1970s. It was the sale of the
hospital’s assets that transformed the OHF into a community-supportive philanthropic organization, with emphasis on
osteopathic medicine, medical education and research in Ohio and beyond.
The historic OHF award of $105 million in 2011 was the largest single gift in the history of public higher education in
Ohio and the largest made in support of primary care. To date, OHF support to Ohio University and the Heritage College
of Osteopathic Medicine totals nearly $123 million.
