A Week In Iquitos
IQUITOS
Hot , humid and stifling . These were the three words that were commonly heard by the missionaries of the 2016 Short Term Mission Team . When their flight from Lima landed in Iquitos and the cockpit door opened , a wave of heat engulfed the air and the missionaries could tell : This was going to be a challenge .
After the first day , the missionaries returned to their hotel drenched in sweat , exhausted and in dismay . The next six days were going to challenge the missionaries physically , mentally and spiritually .
But during the nightly reflection and prayer meetings , the missionaries prayed and placed their faith in God . He had brought them there for a reason and the missionaries knew they could rely on God to protect them . The next six days were filled with praise , dance , laughter and unforgettable memories that would forever remind the missionaries of God ’ s power .
City of Iquitos
The main city of Iquitos is home to three churches that the mission team was scheduled to visit . Because of timing restrictions and scheduling , the mission team visited these churches in the late afternoon . While there were some initial concerns whether the children were willing to greet the team that late , those concerns quickly dispelled when the missionaries was welcomed with open arms by multitudes of children at each of the churches .
ABBA Iquitos
One afternoon , the mission team attended a meeting to discuss the start of ABBA Iquitos . Numerous pastors , youth leaders and ministry leaders gathered to learn about the youth-centered ministry and pray for God ’ s direction . A few months later , they unanimously declared , “ We want ABBA !” Although the 2016 ABBA youth conferences have passed , they look forward to the start of ABBA Iquitos in 2017 .
