The take away message from our story is
this, dogs should never run free. No matter how gentle or sweet a dog may seem,
dogs should not be left unattended with
your horses. Any rough play or biting can
harm or maim a Miniature horse. Their
size makes them vulnerable to the canine.
And my experience is that dog-pack mentality turns them into wild killers.
The following is
a tribute I wrote
about Dandy:
How do you gage the worth?
Of a sweet spirit and kind eyes which
allows a child to smile and giggle with
joy?
Of a soft coat of hair which glistens
gold and a mane of white that sparkles
in the sun and flows with the wind that
has a person sigh at the beauty?
Of an athlete; well conditioned and
trained to pull a cart in both a show
ring and in the hills of Brown County?
Of an elderly person in a nursing home
who has been almost unresponsive and
uncommunicative that upon seeing a
little horse, smiles with wide eyes and
says in delight, “Pony?”
The vet bills for Dandy are a staggering
amount for our family to bear. If you wish to

As of this writing Dandy is happy, sassy, and even trots
away not wanting to be caught for his doctoring. He has
the whole back half of our barn to rest in and within a few
weeks he will be allowed out in the pasture with a muzzle
on so he will not eat grass. He cannot have any roughage
yet because of his injury to his rectum We have to keep his
poo like a cow pattie for quite a while.
Of a little horse who stands solidly
in place when visiting a mentally
handicapped person who, not realizing
their strength, “pets,” him by hitting him
on the back?
Of the delight of a little girl who
dresses him up as a bride and becomes
his bridesmaid or dresses him up as a
carrousel horse and becomes his mistress
of ceremonies?
Of a little horse who by his presence;
helps to heal grief and loss, sadness,
fear, insecurities, and feelings of
inadequacy?
There is no true gage. There is only the
pricelessness of a little Miniature horse
named Dandy.
He consistently has visitors at the barn and will continue to
heal. Our goal is to get him back into the nursing homes to
make folks feel happy.
Dandy Update!
F
itted with a muzzle because he cannot eat hay or grass, Dandy continues to thrive and is
making a slow comeback. His daily ration of senior horse feed and mineral oil is slurped
up with zeal. The fight to bring justice against the dog owners is progressing but at best will
most likely cover only a portion of Dandy’s vet bills.
His “Justice for DANDY” Facebook page has over 500 likes:
