miniature tales By Elizabeth York – Ellettsville, IN When Dogs Attack Double B Dandy Do Right is our retired show gelding who gave his all in an active show life both with our farm and Double B Farm. O ur nightmare started when this 27 year old miniature horse was brutally attacked by three pit bull dogs that got over the fence and into the horse pasture. We thought initially our beloved gelding might have to be put down. After being chased from the property, these three pits came back again while our neighbor and his son were helping us make the barn safe for our other three minis. It was clear that they were on a mission to kill something. Our only choice was to shoot them. Now they will not kill or injure a child or another adult. Dandy is a Miniature horse who loves children and is the sweetest animal. It broke our hearts to think someone’s careless behavior caused him such pain. The dogs not only bit him numerous times on the hind leg and tail, but by far the worst was the gaping wound under his tail that had to be intensively cared for by our vet and at first it was hour by hour, then day by day. I had never seen such a horrid wound. We were numb and sad. But God knows the number of the cows on a hillside. We knew he could take care of a little horse that was here only to bring joy to others. All we could do was pray and hope Dandy would continue fighting for his life. A few days later, Dandy had major surgery to reconstruct his colon/rectum. The Doc called him “Frankenbutt” with all the staples and stitches he had. For several days he was kept quiet with no walking. We visited him to just brush him and bring him watermelon. We were encouraged and hoped he would heal fast and well with no infection. He did enjoy his watermelon, too. 10 Miniature Horse World SPRING 2016
