Umbilical Hernia Procedure

O
ur filly developed an umbilical hernia at about 3 weeks
of age. I had been told this
procedure works so I gave it a try. And it
worked!! The umbilical hernia seems to have
closed. We left the wrap on for 3 and 1/2
weeks. If it comes loose, rewrap it! No surgery. It was about the size of a golf ball when
we started. You could fit 2 to 3 fingers in it.
Darla McCain Elasticon is the
only thing that will stay in place.
It’s very sticky but by the time it is
ready to rewrap, it’s not too hard to get off.
Laura Marie Awesome. I have
a yearling with a very small one,
about the size of a large grape...
maybe I’ll try this.

Laura Marie What did you wrap
with? Ace bandage? Vet Wrap?
Darla McCain I tri-folded a maxi
pad. Pushed the hernia back up
into the gut, pushed the maxi pad
up on it tight and then wrapped it with
elasticon. Once you tape the maxipad to
the stomach, you don’t have to wrap tight.
Just wrap with slight pressure. Use plenty
of elasticon. I had to rewrap after a couple
of weeks.

it will start moving a bit and elastikon tape is the only way to go.
Darla McCain Get the wide Elastacon and the extra absorbent
maxi pad! Ask the pharmacist at
your drug store.

ours closed to almost nothing but
it was further back on the stud
colt we have. We rewrapped it again because the little toot went out and played
and it opened up a hair. So 1 more wrap.

Is the timing important? How
quickly after the hernia is discovered must you apply the wrap? Foal age?
Darla McCain I’m sure the sooner
the better but I’ve heard of
people doing this on yearlings
with success as well.
