2016 Miniature Horse WORLD Issues August/September 2016 Vol 32, #4 | Page 6

editor ’ s notes by Melissa Powell

After a whirlwind summer , I welcome the first signs of back to school and fall . As you are reading this , the Championship Shows are complete and the World Show is on the horizon . Like most breed registries , so much of the business of AMHA surrounds the show ring . Subsequently , we are nearing the highlight of the year for many of our members / exhibitors who have worked hard toward their goals . They will soon experience the excitement , camaraderie , and pageantry that is the AMHA World .

I was not-so-gently reminded recently by a member that not everyone involved in AMHA shows . This member went a bit further , saying the magazine was filled with “ vanity ” ads by people trying to glorify themselves . While I tried to remain unaffected by the remark , I felt a bit of remorse . Could this be the perceived purpose of the magazine ? Then a story from another member came across my desk . This is not the first account of a Miniature horse ’ s innate ability to deeply connect with their human , there are thousands more like it . But Patti Funakoshi ’ s exceptional ride with her Miniature is inspirational , encouraging and typical of the positively wonderful things a Miniature horse can do in a person ’ s life . Patti ’ s beautiful stallion also graces the front cover of this issue , and I encourage you to read her story on page 19 . We are not promised a day , an hour or even the next minute . The message I gleaned from her is this ; make the most of the time you ’ re given and enjoy life to the fullest with your Miniature horse .
This issue also includes a timely article by Tara Needham on Miniature horse dentistry . Tara has a lifetime of experience with horses . So when her gelding , Leo , went off his feed , she knew it was time to ask for help . Luckily , she met Dr . Elaine Means , DVM , who worked to solve Leo ’ s chewing issues and derailed possible teeth problems with the rest of Tara ’ s herd .
