Hunting by bike

A TREND TOWARD QUIET STEALTH

To some it is a strange combination , but hunting and cycling have been symbiotic for decades in the United States . Back in the ’ 80s , the advent of mountain bikes saw off-roading on trails and forest service roads in Colorado and California . It was almost inevitable that someone would take advantage of a bike ’ s stealth to use it for hunting . Recently , the emergence of the fat-tired bike has made pursuing game on two wheels even easier .

While hunting on an ATV provides faster access to large tracts of land , it has drawbacks : noise , smell and size . So , anything that makes carrying gear and travelling through the woods easier , quieter and faster than walking – like a bike – seems like a no-brainer .
At first , hard-tail mountain bikes were jury-rigged to carry hunting gear with rifles tied across the handlebars or on the downtube , but then the big boys : lowpressure , four-inch , fat-tired bikes came onto the scene . Next thing you know , Cogburn ( www . cogburnoutdoors . com /) takes the fatbike and designs scabbards to hold bows and arrows or rifles ( and even fishing rods ),

then gives it a camouflage paint job ( see sidebar ). Recently Petersen has come out with a hunting electric bike ( www . petersenshunting . com / galleries /

Mountain bikes are an incredible ( but underutilized ) tool for hunters , and adding electricity to them makes them even better . Aside from hunting , they can pull double-duty getting deer hunters into tree stands , scent- and sound-free . Turkey hunters can forget “ runand-gun ” techniques covering way more kilometres “ pedalling and gunning .”
There is little doubt that e-bikes have many applications , and they cost a fraction of their motorized counterparts .
