THURSDAY , OCTOBER 6
9:30 - 10:15 OPENING CONVERSATION
// HOLEMAN LOUNGE
At its core , investigative journalists and filmmakers whose work is inspired by the investigative instinct are motivated to expose a truth otherwise concealed from public view . These truths , more often than not , shed light on a significant injustice such as criminal misconduct in the police force , or off-shore tax havens for the wealthy . Both in print and on screen , investigative works are committed to tackling the question of what is being concealed ; what is the lie ? But we seldom pause to ask , why do we lie ? Filmmaker Yael Melamede of ( DIS ) HONESTY : THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES , explores this question through the lens of behavioral science , and uncovers some unexpected truths about why we lie .
With Yael Melamede , director and creator of ( DIS ) HONESTY : THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES .
10:30 - 12:00 TRUTH : ECSTATIC OR EARTHBOUND ?
// HOLEMAN LOUNGE
The traditions of filmmaking and journalism are distinct , as are the demands of the form and with that , the truth they seek . For investigative journalists , truth at its best is grounded in evidence and fact , and accuracy is king . Filmmaker Werner Herzog describes a kind of truth that is the enemy of the merely factual ; an “ ecstatic truth ” that is untethered to fact , conveyed by tapping into the viewer ’ s imagination . He goes further : “ Only in this state of sublimity does something deeper become possible .” As filmmakers and traditional journalists increasingly venture into each other ’ s terrain , the questions around how they define truth and how they reach it are nearing a fever pitch .
Speakers include moderator Franklin Foer , contributing editor , Slate ; Caitlin Dickerson , national correspondent , The New York Times ; James Solomon , director , THE WITNESS ; Elyse Steinberg , co-director , WEINER .
