Natural Areas

Management Plan

20-Year Plan Takes Significant Step Forward
San Francisco encompasses an area of 49 square miles , in which small fragments of a unique ecosystem called the Franciscan landscape , part of the larger Bay / Delta region , still exist today . The Franciscan landscape extended from San Bruno Mountain to the Golden Gate Headlands , and its unusual combination of climatic , floristic , and geologic features supported the development of a biologically diverse assemblage of plants and animals , some of which were unique to the area .
Most of the remnant fragments of the Franciscan landscape are included in the 32 Natural Resources Areas ( Natural Areas ) around the city that are currently preserved and protected by the Natural Resources Division of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department .
A critical component of the Natural Resources Division is the development of a restoration and management plan that provides a scientifically sound planning framework to manage these areas . Several planning and policy efforts have preceded the development of this plan and form the foundation of its goals and recommendations . Among the plan ’ s goals are :
+ Promoting biodiversity & sustainable landscapes + Restoring native flora & fauna + Promoting soil and water conservation + Improving resiliency to climate change + Advocating for environmental justice
The city ’ s Planning and Recreation and Park commissions , after hearing testimony from more than 100 members of the public , approved actions around the department ’ s Natural Resource Management Plan ( NRMP ) in December .
The Planning Commission voted to certify the plan ’ s final Environmental Impact Report ( EIR ), and the Recreation and Park Commission unanimously adopted its California Environmental Quality Act ( CEQA ) findings and approved the plan . d green space filter rain which water pollution and protects water .
