Equity in Parks

Building a New Lens to View Allocation of Resources
With the approval of Proposition B by 60 % of the electorate in June 2016 , a revision to Section 16.107 Park , Recreation and Open Space Fund of the City Charter mandates the department to formally consider and measure equity in its allocation of resources .
The department used the following criteria to identify “ Equity Zones ” in the city : age , asthma , low-birth weight , low education , linguistic isolation , poverty and unemployment , and has begun collecting data on its services .

84 % of repair and maintenance work requests completed in Equity Zones , compared to 82 % in non-Equity Zones

$ 124,298 in capital investment per 1,000 residents in Equity Zones , compared to $ 30,598 in non-Equity Zones

135 hours of recreation volunteer time per 1,000 residents in Equity Zones , compared to 101 hours in non-Equity Zones
30 park volunteer hours per acre in Equity Zones , compared to 28 in non-Equity Zones
