CHI St . Luke ’ s Health has a deep commitment to working with communities to make a transformative difference . We understand that good health is more than the absence of disease . It ’ s a state of complete physical , mental , social , and spiritual well-being . With that in mind and with the help of our generous donors , we are developing innovative solutions to health-related challenges .
Transplant Services : Supporting Our Legacy
Since 1982 , Baylor St . Luke ’ s Medical Center ( Baylor St . Luke ’ s ) has been the home of exceptional care for patients referred for heart , lung , kidney , and liver transplantation , as well as implantation of left ventricular assist devices ( LVADs ). The Cooley Transplant Center at Baylor St . Luke ’ s provides a complete continuum of patient care and is continuously recognized for its successful outcomes . Our donors support initiatives in a variety of areas , including :
The Brown Foundation Surgical Fellowships in Abdominal Transplant
The Brown Foundation Surgical Fellows program is led by John Goss , MD , who is widely regarded as an international expert and leader in liver disease and transplant medicine . The two-year program immerses fellows in a rotation with the liver and the kidney service . Once completed , fellows garner the technical skills necessary to excel as surgeons , the knowledge required to become board certified in transplant surgery , and the ability to successfully establish an independent research program .
The Heart Exchange Support Group
The annual St . Luke ’ s Foundation Heart Golf Classic raises vital funds in support of the Heart Exchange Support Group , a nonprofit organization that re-invests 100 percent of its proceeds back into the medical and transplant patient community . For 30 years , the Heart Golf Classic has benefited thousands of patients and their families , raised awareness of the need for organ donations , and provided emotional support and education on the transplant process . Additionally , the event provides patients with financial assistance for medication , parking , transportation , and housing . Funds also benefit research for heart patient survival and continuing education for transplant nurses .
The JLH Foundation Fund
For nearly a decade , the JLH Foundation has supported hundreds of liver and kidney transplant patients and their families with direct financial assistance for medical co-payments , medical supplies , dental screening and care , lodging , parking , and food .
This past fiscal year , funds from the JLH Foundation directly assisted 30 patients , including a dental screening for a patient who was unable to receive a new kidney without it ; local temporary housing for a liver transplant patient ; and medications for a heart transplant patient whose Medicare Plan D coverage had been terminated .
