Dallas PAL - 2nd Annual Chess Tournament Dallas PAL held their 2nd Annual Chess Tournament at Dallas Police Headquarters, and more than 65 kids from all over Dallas participated in the competition. The youth were divided into three age categories: 6 to 11 year olds, 12 to 14 year olds, and 15 to 17 year olds. There were three winners per category and the top winner of each category took home a crystal glass trophy set, a regular standing trophy, and a $25.00 gift card. Dallas Police Senior Corporal James Petty coordinates the chess program and is very proud of all the boys and girls who participate and the progress they’ve made. “These boys and girls are very knowledgeable in this game and they are humble in their sportsmanship,” stated Petty. Congratulations to the all the winners in the chess tournament; see you next year! 23 Dallas PAL - Boxing Recognized On February 17, 2016, City Council Member Adam Medrano recognized the Dallas PAL Boxing Program for their outstanding commitment and dedication to Dallas area youth. The boxing program began in early 2013 when Senior Corporal Daniel Espinosa stepped inside the Janie C. Turner Recreation Center in Pleasant Grove asking for permission to use the facilities to teach kids the fundamentals of boxing. With the assistance of Recreation Manager Yolanda Carter and Coach George, a volunteer, the boxing program kicked off. It takes a lot of equipment to get a successful program started but all Coach Danny initially had was high hopes and a bag full of hand wraps and boxing gloves. Over time, the pieces came together and the boxing gym officially opened its doors May 2013. Fast forward three years, the Dallas PAL boxing program accepted their Special Recognition Award for their reputation in developing champions. Great job Dallas PAL, keep up the outstanding work! 24
