Response to Potential Suicide 1 . Any indication of a potential suicide , whether personally witnessed or received by report from another , must be taken seriously and must be reported to the Principal immediately .
2 . The Principal shall immediately inform school psychologist , social worker , behaviorist , or outreach worker who shall investigate the matter promptly and conduct a risk assessment as may be appropriate .
3 . The Principal will inform the pupil ’ s parent ( s ) or legal guardian ( s ) for a conference if possible of the signs demonstrated by the pupil and of the district ’ s concern and seek parent approval for further evaluation . In the event of parental abuse and neglect is suspected , the Principal or designee , will immediately so inform the Division of Youth and Family Services in accordance with Policy No . 8462 .
4 . If the threat of suicide is immediate and serious , the Principal will implement emergency procedures including initiating a request for an immediate psychiatric evaluation which will be determined by : a . Whether any suicide plans have been made , how detailed the plans are , and whether any preliminary actions have been taken . b . The pupils feelings of hopelessness and the length of time the pupil has such feelings , c . The pupil ’ s thoughts of suicide and how persistent and strong these thoughts are , and d . Whether the pupil has considered alternative courses of action to resolve his / her problem
5 . After gathering the information if it is determined to be a substantial risk of suicide exists the Principal shall :
a . Assign staff members as required to assure that the pupil is never out of the presence of an adult who has been fully informed that the pupil may be in danger of self- destruction , b . Will request the parent to take immediate action . If the parent does not agree , the Principal may contact appropriate authorities , including the Superintendent of Schools .
6 . Upon the student ’ s return to school , the Principal or designee will be responsible for following up on the student
7 . Following the assessment and emergency evaluation , if recommended , a formal referral to the Child Study Team will be initiated .

Response to Suicide Attempt 1 . Any attempted suicide , whether or not on school premises or during the school day , must be reported immediately to the Principal .
2 . The staff member who witnesses a suicide attempt on school premises or at a school sponsored event or in the course of school-related travel shall render first aid in accordance with Policy No . 8441 and summon medical assistance as appropriate .
3 . Procedures outlined B2 through B7 above will be followed .
Prevention of Suicide Contagion 1 . All district Principals will be promptly informed when a pupil of this district commits suicide . 2 . Each Principal will assemble teaching staff members prior to the opening of school to provide them with accurate information , plans for the school day , and guidelines for handing the concerns of pupils .
3 . The Principal of the school or building that the victim attended will assign a crisis team from the pupil personnel staff to assist the staff in dealing with the general school situation and any individual problems that may arise .
4 . The suicide will not be given prominence by public announcement or a school-wide assembly . School will not be closed in order to permit pupils and staff members to attend the victim ’ s funeral .
5 . Teachers will respond to the needs of pupils with as little interruption of the educational program as possible .
