Traveling up Hwy. 49 from Auburn the
first “community” encountered is an area
known as South County. Although rural in
nature, it has been growing over the years.
The area features a variety of lifestyles from
horse property to vineyards, golf course
homes and neighborhoods within a gated
community.
One early settler was Michael Higgins, an
Irish immigrant who came to California in
1852. He moved to the southern part of
what would become Nevada County in
1860. Here Higgins farmed and raised
stock. He was also an owner of the
Globe Hotel, a local stage stop.
According to reports, it was the
site of much dancing and
merry-making, especially
on St. Patrick’s Day.
