Eagle Times’ Progression

2016-2017

By Patrick Wilbratte

In just one year we’ve seen this paper flourish into what it is today. We’ve gone from having a few people read it to having roughly five hundred people read it. Not to mention, we’ve changed things about how we spread Shaw news around. We now have a twitter account, we’ve gone from a couple of photographers to fourteen and we’ve got writers who take pride in what they do. Overall, we’ve come a long way since the first nine weeks here.

Every day it’s no surprise to hear we’ve got more followers than the day before. We have students managing Shaw’s twitter account, so the students now have sports scores, the scheduled classes, and school events all at their fingertips. We’ve got people subscribing to the next issues before they even come out. People are interested in what the students are saying. We’ve even had one of our writers asked to write articles for bigger papers such as the Clarion Herald and Times-Picayune.

Our photographers for the paper have progressed immensely. In the first few issues, we may have had a few hundred blurred, out of focus, and overly lit shots on the camera roll. Now, we rarely get photos that aren’t good enough for the paper. It’s a constant struggle to find which shots we can fit into each issue. Our photographers for the newspaper and yearbook truly are phenomenal. They’re constantly learning new things they can do with their cameras and never fail to capture the moment at hand.

It’s safe to say the newspaper class of 2017 has laid the groundwork for the next generations of students to build from. This year couldn’t have gone better and I know our writers and photographers put forward every effort they could muster this year. I know our school couldn’t be more proud of them and how much they’ve done.
