P B C Y E A R B O O K 54 Women’s Track & Field Nova Southeastern Wins PBC Women’s Track & Field Championship MONTEVALLO, ALA – Nova Southeastern University set a new PBC championship team scoring record with 214.5 points to capture the 2017 title on Saturday in Montevallo. The Sharks finished ahead of second-place UNC Pembroke at 159 points and third-place Montevaloo with 154.5. The championship is the first for Nova Southeastern. Head coach Bryan Hagopian received the women’s track and field Coach of the Year award for the second year in a row while Stefan Matula garnered the men’s Field Athlete of the Year. Matula scored a men’s team-high 29 points after winning the javelin and pole vault as well as placing fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put. “I am so happy for our team, our student-athletes and our coaching staff,” boasted Hagopian. “Everyone competed well this weekend and it would not have been possible without my assistant coaches, strength coaches and athletic trainers. We have been wait- ing for this moment since we joined the conference in 2012 and it is just an incredible feeling. I’ll never forget how great it felt to finally raise the championship banner and trophy.” The day started with the final field event, the men’s shotput. Logan Lowry finished fourth at 13.28m while Matula threw a sea- son-best 13.18m placing fifth. Later on, Kamaria Johnson claimed her second gold medal with a win in the women’s shotput with a throw of 12.64m. On the track, the men started with a great performance in the 800m run. Raphael de Bonnieres and Dwayne Edwards finished sec- ond and third while running personal-bests 1:53.61s and 1:54.47s respectively. Benjamin Manuel also placed eighth at 1:56.28s while Wade White and Ian McQuate ran career-bests 1:57.25s and 1:58.94s.
