lifted the fifth-ranked Columbus State University women’s soccer
team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over 16th-ranked West
Florida on Sunday. The national quarterfinal match was played at
Barry University.
The victory sends the Lady Cougars to the Final Four for the
second consecutive season. CSU will face a familiar foe, as it will
match up against second-ranked Grand Valley State. The two teams
met in last year’s national championship match.
The national semifinal match is scheduled for Thursday, Decem-
ber 1 in Kansas City, Mo.
“The girls showed incredible fight today,” head coach Jay Entlich
said. “West Florida was very good today and gave us everything we
could handle.
Columbus State (21-2-0) got rolling early on Sunday. Olivia Jar-
rell got off a header in the second minute of the contest that missed
just wide.
The Lady Cougars got on the board in the ninth minute. Nicole
Corcione dribbled through the attacking third and beat the keeper
from just inside the box to give CSU the 1-0 lead. The goal was the
senior’s 13th of the season.
Columbus State stayed on the offensive attack throughout the
first half, taking eight shots over the first 45 minutes. However,
West Florida was able to keep the rest out of the net sending the
match to halftime at 1-0.
In the second half, it was West Florida (19-5-0) that flipped the
script and controlled the pace of play. The Argos took the opening
six shots of the half, the last of which leveled the match.
In the 69th minute, UWF hit the perfect corner kick that bent its
way into the box and tucked inside the near post to even the score
at one-all.
The two sides then exchanged shots over the final 20 minutes
of regulation, but it appeared that CSU was set to go in front in the
87th minute. Taylor Marks got off a clean look from straight on,
however the ball deflected off the right post and stayed out of the
net.
Columbus State controlled possession in the first overtime,
but the two teams attempted just one shot apiece setting up the
heroics in the second overtime.
Maylyn Parsons made five saves in net to add another victory to
her tally.
