Year in Review
2015 was another satisfyingly successful year for KIAC. Once again, hundreds of hours
of programming were delivered in support of the Institute’s mandate to foster Yukon
arts and culture, with more than 10,000 attendees taking part in KIAC-produced
happenings.
The past year saw the 16th edition of the Dawson City International Short Film Festival,
as well as the 15th Yukon Riverside Arts Festival, and both of those major festivals
continued to expand and improve. We assisted Thompson Rivers University with the
Midnight Sun Camera Obscura Festival, a wonderful experience for local people, and
an event that contributes to KIAC’s growing international reputation. The 4th Dawson
Daily News Print & Publishing Symposium continued to find its footing, helping KIAC
spark new interest in writing, craft printing, and printmaking and the 15th Youth Art
Enrichment, which provides educational opportunities for Yukon high school students,
rounded out very busy programming year.
But, while the major festivals or events may temporarily capture the spotlight, it is the
dozens of ongoing year-round programs that are KIAC’s lifeblood, and that truly ensure
the achievement of our vision to enrich the quality of life in the Yukon through the
enhancement of arts, culture, and an art-based economy. This year, KIAC conducted an
extensive community survey, followed by a staff and board retreat to review the survey
results and incorporate suggestions into our strategic plan. Staff and board have been
continuing to refine this new plan which we will be releasing early in 2016.
