MARGARET TALBOT joined The New Yorker as a
staff writer. Previously, she was a contributing writer
at the New York Times Magazine and, from 1995
to 1999, an editor at The New Republic. She is the
author of “The Entertainer: Movies, Magic and My
Father’s Twentieth Century,” about Lyle Talbot, her
father.
KATIE TOWNSEND is the Reporters Committee
for Freedom of the Press’ first litigation director.
She oversees freedom of information activities
and participates in a full range of media law issues
with a focus on handling litigation brought by the
Reporters Committee. Townsend, who holds a B.A
