celebrating the PPIE centennial
This year marked the 100th anniversary of the
Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE),
the World’s Fair celebrating the completion of the
Panama Canal and showcasing San Francisco’s
recovery from the devastation of the 1906 earthquake and fire and its emergence as a global city.
In commemoration of the Centennial Anniversary of
the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE),
the California Historical Society, Innovation Hangar,
Maybeck Foundation and Rec and Park led a yearlong citywide celebration that showcased this critical
event that shaped the San Francisco we know today:
a city undaunted by tragedy, audaciously innovative,
and rising to meet the challenges of the day.
PPIE100 brought together more than 35 participating
Bay Area cultural organizations, in addition to
business and corporate partners -- to present a
variety of public exhibitions, thrilling events,
performances, lectures, and symposia – in helping
recreate and tell the amazing stories around the 1915
PPIE World’s Fair – a moment in history when
San Francisco stepped onto the world stage.
A free community day at the Palace of Fine Arts
on February 21 drew more than 10,000 people to
celebrate the centennial.
