What is Martha’s Place?
Martha's Place is a program of the nonprofit Newborn Holistic Ministries which was founded in 1996 by life‐long
community resident Elder C.W. Harris. Newborn follows a mission to preserve and enrich life in its communities by
providing services that will enable residents to meet their material, social, and spiritual needs. In 2000, Newborn
began to address the overwhelming epidemic of drug abuse in our communities and created Martha's Place in direct
response to the unmet need for long‐term recovery services for women.

My summer placement at Martha’s Place
was a tremendous learning experience. Part
of the motivation behind my choosing to
participate in CIIP this summer was my
desire for the opportunity to break from the
traditional monotony of the classroom
setting and gain some hands‐on public
health experience in Baltimore. Through
both professional and casual interactions,
meetings, and asking many questions along
the way, I learned a great deal about
addiction, mental health and the
homelessness issue in Baltimore. I was truly
inspired by the resilience of the women I
served and the devotion of my coworkers at
Martha’s Place. My CIIP internship has
strengthened my personal stake in this city,
increased my understanding of public health
as a diverse discipline and reinforced my

passion for the field.‐Ezinne
