What is the Liberty Rec and Tech Center?
The Liberty Rec Center is one of the rec
centers that was closed by the city and was
taken over in collaboration with the
surrounding neighborhood and attached
Liberty elementary school.
While most interns work with a handful of coworkers at their non‐profits, I have the
privilege of joining a team of teachers, administrators, volunteers, teaching
residents, and other staff members at Liberty Elementary School. Let me share the
story of one day surrounded by this group – this family – of incredibly dedicated
individuals. It starts at 12:03 AM with an email from my boss, the school’s principal.
Just as I am going to sleep, he is on the job answering work‐related concerns. Come
8 AM, I am just arriving at work. One of the teaching aides buzzes me through the
main doors. She comes in early to run the main office, filling a need without
obligation or fuss. It’s an easy Friday at summer school until I realize that I made a
mistake in payroll. My face blanches paper‐white as I hold the incorrect paycheck.
