What is Boone Street Farm/Whitelock Community Farm?
Boone Street Farm provides large outdoor space to grow fresh produce
Tasks
● Farm work including weeding and planting beds, watering
seedlings, broad forking new rows, mulching, and
harvesting produce.
● Prepped and operated the weekly neighborhood farm
stand. From this stand, the farm was able to distribute their
weekly CSA shares, sell produce at reduced prices, and meet
new community members.
● Assisted in organizing a community potluck that provided
over 40 community members with food, fun, and an
opportunity to learn more about the farm.
● Researched the feasibility and process of transitioning an
urban farm into a permanent green space.
I knew I loved living in Baltimore even before this summer. Not just for the beer that used to be brewed here
or for the football team that plays in the stadium near by, but for the passion its citizens have. However, this
summer allowed me to finally put faces to many of the passionate greeners that I have read about, heard from
and aspired to follow. Having the incredible opportunity to work on two urban farms has taught me the
balancing act that takes place on many urban farms. They often have to juggle issues around land security,
water access, community outreach, youth education, and farm safety all in addition to crop production.
However, they do it and often with grace. From the passionate people I worked with on the farm, to the
incredible neighbors who lived just around the corner, I am thankful for the opportunity to meet them and
share our love of food. One of the most empowering things I have ever done is eat food that I grew with my
own two hands, and I learned this right on the farms I worked at this summer. I can only hope that others are

able to continue having incredible experiences like that.‐ Maggie
