ichipicoten (Wawa) is on Champlain’s 1632 map
making it one of the oldest place names. The hub of a vast
wilderness vacation area, this town of 3,200 is located at
the junction of Highway 17 and 101, 227 km (150 mi) north
of Sault Ste. Marie. To visitors, Wawa is well known for its
famous Goose Monument, which stands overlooking Trans
Canada Highway 17. Wawa’s location on the north eastern
shore of Lake Superior and surrounded by inland lakes
makes it an attractive destination for paddling, fishing, and
other adventures. The Wawa Tourist Information Centre
is located at the junction of Hwy 17 and 101. Open from

Chapleau is also known as the gateway to the Chapleau
Crown Game Preserve. This area of more than 700,000
hectares was set aside in 1925 to ensure that our part
of Northern Ontario stays wild and stays healthy. It is the
largest Crown Game Preserve in the world. Ontario’s finest
wilderness is right on our doorstep and offers some of the
best fishing, hunting, canoeing and boating opportunities
to be found anywhere. In fact, Chapleau was recently
crowned Canada’s Ultimate Fishing Town by the World
Fishing Network. Whether you are an inexperienced or
extreme angler, our hundreds of lakes and rivers can
accommodate your preferences.
For the ATV enthusiast, countless roads and trails offer an
amazing variety of riding experiences. If winter is your time
of year, come and experience our spectacular snowmobile
trail network, drop a line through the ice on one of the
countless lakes, compete in our annual Pike Ice Fishing
Derby, or attend our Taste of the North Winter Carnival. Our

Chapleau is easily accessible by road; Hwy 129 begins at
Thessalon and follows the beautiful Mississagi River while
Hwy 101 East and West provide countless picturesque
views. A regional rail passenger service known as the
Budd Car connects Chapleau with Sudbury and White
River providing access to many tourist establishments.
