Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site
Situated on the north shore of Lake Huron, Fort St. Joseph
served as the base for the first British military manoeuvre
against the Americans in the War of 1812. Today, Fort St.
Joseph invites you to take a guided tour or wander the
Fort grounds on your own, learning the history of the site
through its many ruins and interpretive products.
Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site
Let your imagination run wild as an expert interpreter
takes you on a tour through the past. Begin at the Visitor
Centre in the historic Powerhouse building to discover
how the world’s longest and first electrically operated lock
works, and hear what went wrong during the accident of
1909. Explore the lock wall and the important buildings
and features of the canal. From mid-May to mid-October,
watch boats passing through the recreational lock. The
site’s features include picnic grounds, a 2.2 km hiking trail,
the world’s only remaining Emergency Swing Dam, as well
as a gift shop and exhibits.
