“Education is a key part of the foundation on which strong
communities are built, and supporting educational initiatives is
among the ways SunTrust helps light the way to financial well-being
for our communities and our clients,” said David Camden, President of
SunTrust Bank, Savannah Region. “We are pleased to partner with the
Peach Belt Conference in awarding this scholarship to Janivette Perez
in recognition of her excellence in the classroom and on the track.”
Away from the track, Perez was involved in the UNCP Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), beginning as secretary
before moving up to vice president her junior year and president her
senior season. She also was a member of the UNCP University Athletics Committee, represented the school at the PBC Women in Athletics
Seminar and attended PBC SAAC meetings.
Perez plans to stay at UNC Pembroke to pursue her master’s in
teaching with the goal of being a licensed physical education teacher

Francis Marion Wins SunTrust Connecting Communities Award
HILTON HEAD, SC – The Francis Marion University athletic department
was presented with the 2016 SunTrust Connecting Communities
2015-16
Awards on Tuesday night at the PBC annual awards banquet in Hilton
Head. FMU received the honor for ‘Boys and Girls Club Day’ which
brought hundreds of local youth to the FMU campus for a day of interaction with Patriot student-athletes.
The event was sponsored by Pepsi of Florence and Walmart to
engage the Pee Dee Area Boys and Girls Club and promote the Walmart
Fighting Hunger Program.
Walmart hosted live radio remotes with FMU Athletics and Pepsi
in various locations across the Pee Dee region, giving local residents
the opportunity to contribute to the Fighting Hunger program by
purchasing Aquafina or Lipton products. Residents could also enter to
have a chance to win free admission to a Peach Belt Conference baseball
doubleheader between FMU and Georgia Southwestern State on April
23.
Free admission to the game was also provided to the various chapters of the Pee Dee Boys and Girls Club. Over 150 children were in the
stands for the PBC doubleheader on the 23rd, each of them given free
concessions by the FMU athletic department.
The SunTrust Connecting Communities award is designed to
recognize efforts undertaken by PBC member institutions to reach out
and be a partner with their local and regional communities. The award
provides a cash prize to be given to the winning schools’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
