Young people across the region
This year kicked off with the induction of 20 new
youth leaders being selected from across the region
to represent our young people. The group consisted
of youths from Clifton, Crows Nest, Highfields,
Millmerran, Pittsworth, Ramsay, and Toowoomba.
Youth leaders obtain important foundation skills
including assisting at events and development of their
own projects. This year, our youth leaders assisted
with University of Southern Queensland (USQ)
Change Makers concert, Y-NOT youth concert,
Crows Nest youth day activities, movie nights
and fundraisers.
This year saw over 12,700 young people participate in
201 Youth Connect programs including skateboarding
workshops, concerts, art, music, basketball and pool
parties. Surveys completed after these events saw
that our young people are 95 per cent satisfied with
the diversity of programming and local delivery. The
health and wellbeing of our youths is also a key focus
and this year, Council was involved in a number of
partnerships across the region to support the mental
and physical health of our youth, as well as resources
for youth homelessness.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities
Over 5,000 people in our region identify as Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander and engagement of these
valued communities is extremely important to Council.
This year, Council assisted in building a positive and
cohesive community with the celebration of NAIDOC
Week, as well as the ‘Have a look at Captain Cook’
program in conjunction with the Cobb+Co Museum.
NAIDOC Week activities including Midnight Basketball
and Whad Up saw over 1,300 young people
come together and share the history, culture and
achievements of our Indigenous Peoples.
