Oncology Nursing Society
International Outreach Grows
In Chile. ONS expanded its international reach by conducting clinical sessions and
a leadership preconference session at the inaugural International Oncology Nursing
Conference, which was part of a larger interdisciplinary gastro-oncology conference.
Separately, ONS joined the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the National Cancer Institute, and Latin American organizations Grupo Oncológico Cooperativo
Chileno de Investigación and the Federación de Sociedades Latinoamericanas de
Cáncerología to support the role of the nurse in clinical trials research as part of the
International Clinical Trials Workshop.
In Bolivia. We partnered with ASCO to support the integration of nursing education
in clinical cancer care as part of the Multidisciplinary Cancer Management Course.
In Germany. ONS education and resources gained exposure among a global multidisciplinary audience at the Multidisciplinary Association of Supportive Cancer Care
annual conference in Berlin.
In the Sultanate of Oman. ONS conducted its second advanced palliative care course
for community nurses, designed to be a sustainable model for palliative care training
that can be adapted for other nurses in the region.

Muscat, Sultanate of Oman
“I gained a lot of skills and knowledge, which will help me to
implement palliative care in my hospital. I learned psychosocial
support and ways of communication techniques, which will help
now to deal with palliative patients. ”
ONS is
represented
by members
in 60
countries.
In the United Arab Emirates. ONS coordinated an oncology nursing track on chemotherapy and biotherapy at the interdisciplinary UAE Cancer Congress in Dubai and conducted
a nursing session on using research to implement evidence-based practice at the Emirates
Oncology Conference in Abu Dhabi. This strategically positioned nursing education and
ONS in a critical world region.
Nursing-Sensitive Updates in Chemotherapy and Targeted Therapy Treatments,
UAE Cancer Congress, Dubai, UAE, October 3–5, 2013
“I am a community nurse working in the field of palliative care, so having
updates on current disease developments and treatments was the most useful
part of this course for me. Side effects of treatments was also useful as we
manage patients in the community during their treatments. I am now more
aware of specific side effects and how to recognise oncological emergencies.
It was also useful to network with colleagues working in the UAE.”
In Saudi Arabia. ONS signed a memorandum of understanding with a school of nursing
and a hospital, opening the door to sustainable implementation of ONS resources that
will serve nurses within the country and region.
In Russia. Through a grant obtained by the Russian Nursing Association (RNA) from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, ONS and the
RNA developed and implemented the first
of two Russian Evidence-Based Oncology
Nursing Practice Workshops. These fiveday “train the trainer” programs focus on
increasing the capacity of nurses in Russia
to treat patients receiving chemotherapy.
They also develop and implement documentation procedures and increase knowledge
of evidence-based practice, helping nurses to
make quality changes within their institutions and
community.
