PH $5000 A most perplexing item, offered with four different opinions, but no definitive answer. Card, which is creased heavily through center, is surcharged like the exceedingly rare so-called ‘Library Card’ from Long Beach, CA. It bears a Feb 10, 1921, machine cancel from Salem, MA. Card has been extensively examined by many experts in the field, with following results: (1) An Aug 15, 2007, letter from Lewis Bussey, editor of the 2005 ‘US Postal Card Catalog,’ who opines that card appears to have legitimate ‘Boston, MA’ surcharge (similar to that applied to UX29 and UX30), and ‘dates within the correct time period for surcharges’; (2) Dec 9, 2009, APS Cert #189666, which reads: ‘United States, Scott No. UX25 with what appears to be an unlisted Boston favor surcharge (cancel appears to be over the surcharge), used, 2/10/1921, Salem, Mass., GENUINE, vertical crease’; (3) May 23, 2011 PF Cert #495492, which simply proclaims the card to have a ‘fraudulent surcharge’; and (4) April 29, 2013 PSAG Cert #0562586 ‘No Opinion.’ At issue is whether cancel appears over surcharge (virtually eliminating fakery), which appears to be the case. Final score? 1½-yes, 1-no, and 1-no opinion. Fascinating item gaining philatelic lore. Known ‘Library Card’ UX36 catalogs for $100,000. This one, so far unique, is the same, except for surcharge type, which is related to city of origin.
