The borough is celebrating its centennial this year and was originally incorporated as the Borough of East Paterson. In November of 1972, the town voted to change the name. Since becoming Elmwood Park, the borough has had only has one mayor, Richard Mola, who can boast the longest mayoral tenure in Bergen County. The 2.4-square-mile borough abuts the Oradell Reservoir and is home to the Emerson Woods Preserve, a 19-acre watershed buffer featuring trails, a roofed kiosk posting educational information on the abundant flower and fauna inside the woods and a self-guided nature walk. Development of the downtown area along Kinderkamack Road near the train station is in the works with plans for retail and residential units, as well as more parking.
