2 trivia Bergen County Bucket List Bergen is home to many wonderful places to visit and things to do. But, for whatever reason, we don’t take advantage of what’s right in our own backyard. Below is our bucket list – try to do them all before you lose the chance! 1. MAKE OUT AT THE ALPINE LOOKOUT This popular overlook on the Palisades Interstate Parkway is a romantic place to view the Hudson River and New York. Alternately, if love is not in the air, take a hike through Palisades Interstate Park. There are three main park entrances. 2. WALK ACROSS THE GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE – AND BACK The views of New York City and the Palisades in New Jersey are spectacular – and be sure to look up at the 570-foot steel towers. Park south of the bridge on Hudson Terrace, the street perpendicular to the bridge, then walk to the entrance ramp of the south sidewalk, which is also on Hudson Terrace in Fort Lee. 3. ENJOY A TREAT AT BISCHOFF’S IN TEANECK This ice cream parlor has been making its own ice cream for more than 80 years. It still serves up sundaes and ice cream sodas, with all the trimmings – including real whipped cream. Try the pineapple soda, with ice cream and pieces of pineapple in it. 468 Cedar Lane, Teaneck, (201) 836-0333 4. PLAY A ROUND OF GOLF AT RIDGEWOOD COUNTRY CLUB This famous course, designed by A.W. Tillinghast, is open only to members of this exclusive country club. But supporting a charity event that hosts a golf fundraiser there – such as The Valley Hospital Auxiliary or the Adaptive Sports Foundation – is a good way to play Bergen’s best course of 27 holes if you are not a member or don’t know one. 96 W. Midland Ave., Paramus, (201) 599-3900 24 2017 EDITION | (201) WELCOME 1 3 5. EAT A BURGER – OR TWO, OR THREE – AT WHITE MANNA IN HACKENSACK This famous eatery serves sliders and seats only a handful of people, but you can also get the burgers to go. The burgers are smashed on the griddle, served on a steamed potato bun and – if you like – can be topped with grilled onions. 358 River St., Hackensack, (201) 342-0914 4 5 6. WATCH A HORSE RACE AT MEADOWLANDS RACETRACK The $88 million grandstand, which opened in 2013, features the upscale Victory Club, a great view of Manhattan from the rooftop bar, a bright, modern design, and exciting races. 1 Racetrack Drive, East Rutherford, (201) 843-2446 7. INDULGE IN A GOURMET MEAL AT THE SADDLE RIVER INN 6 8. EAT A THIN-CRUST PIZZA AT KINCHLEY’S TAVERN IN RAMSEY 8 One of Bergen County’s most acclaimed restaurants, this culinary icon has a New American menu full of ethnic influences, but rooted in classic French techniques. Try the well-known “maribar” – a plump center-cut filet mignon with a lively béarnaise sauce, chestnut butter and potato gratin. The Record gave the Saddle River Inn three-and-a-half stars. Also notable: Saddle River Inn is BYO. 2 Barnstable Court, Saddle River, (201) 825-4016 A Bergen County landmark still serving its ultrathin-crust pizza to a devoted following. Great for families, and easy on the wallet. Feeling adventurous? Try the Garbage Pie. 586 Franklin Turnpike, Ramsey, (201) 934-7777 7
