Home Bridging Old & New Hoboken brownstone highlights original charm with modern elements WRITTEN BY TARA HOPFENSPIRGER PHOTOS COURTESY OF BLACKSTOCK PHOTOGRAPHY AND ELLIOTT KAUFMAN PHOTOGRAPHY N eutral colors blend with pops of eye-catching patterns and textures to make this threestory Hoboken apartment stand out among the rest. Homeowners Joanne and Craig Laurie chose the building, a 1890s brownstone that was originally a threefamily house, for both its beautiful, traditional façade and its 24-foot width. The brownstone went through a full gut renovation, while maintaining its original charm, so that the layout and flow of the old building could be maximized. Joanne Laurie of J Laurie Designs served as the interior designer of her own home, joining forces with lead architect Jennifer Marsh of Mowery Marsh Architects. The two women perfectly combined traditional architecture with modern design to create an exceptionally cohesive space highlighted with one-of-a-kind period details. In the living room, simple and refined architectural elements give the space a grand, established look and feel. The custom-made Marvin arched front windows framed in substantial trim work match the arched masonry on the outside of the building. The unique windows are highlighted by custom shutters, painted in a contrasting high-gloss black color. Serving as the focal point of the room is the velvet, mushroom-colored Jonathan Adler sofa, accented by two gray and white Luna Rosa Home pillows. The gorgeous white oak floors are accented by a cream-toned wool and sisal rug, and a faux sheepskin Nate Berkus stool and custom-made leather poof add two more distinctive textures to the living room. A Clayton Gray Home bubble glass chandelier hangs from the ceiling, drawing one’s attention down to the Kartell Lucite coffee table. To the left of the fireplace is an additional sitting area, complete with a velvet leopard-print armchair and footstool resting on a cowhide carpet, again adding to the layers throughout the room. Opposite that corner is a bar cabinet with a vintage piece of abstract art above it to complete the subtly eclectic style in the main living space. > 56 MARCH 2016 (201) GOLD COAST BLACKSTOCK PHOTOGRAPHY LIVING ROOM
