PRE-TEEN BEDROOM PLAYS WITH BOLD YET FEMININE COLORS
COMPILED BY LAURA ADAMS STIANSEN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF WARREN YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHY
DESIGNED BY JULIE KANTROWITZ OF JK INTERIOR LIVING, RIDGEWOOD
“ I
t is always so inspiring when
you have clients requesting some-
thing out of the ordinary,” Julie
Kantrowitz of JK Interior Living says.
“This mother-and-daughter duo
came to me asking for a unique
bedroom unlike any they’ve seen.”
Kantrowitz chose to use the base wall
color as a deep gray with the slightest
purple undertone to ensure it worked
with the fuchsia fleur-de-lis stencil color.
“If you’re selecting more than one paint
color, it’s essential to test them on the
wall together to ensure they’re the best
fit for one another,” she says.

The designer suggests when search-
ing for dressers, a sure-fire way to
ensure originality is to buy vintage.
She worked with a seller on Etsy who
refinishes antique bedroom furniture
and customizes the paint specific to your
decor. “We chose a slightly richer gray
for the dresser – so as not to be a perfect
match to wall color – and had the dress-
er gilded in a soft gold to accentuate
every carved detail,” Kantrowitz says.
“This metallic accent brought a chic and
sophisticated element to the room.”
She notes that if you’re searching for
a local dealer and refinisher to check out
Tesori Furniture in Midland Park. “The
owner, Theresa Rickert, has a beautiful
antique shop, she says, “and refinishes
all of her pieces on site.”
Hanging above the dresser is color-
ful art that coordinates with the fabric
selections from the bedding and
upholstered ottoman. Katie Diamond
Jewelry in Ridgewood had a beautiful
collection of art and wall hanging jewel-
ry that worked perfectly with the space.
Tying in the linens, lighting and
area rug, as well as mirrored bedside
tables, this bedroom came together
beautifully. ●
