1969 Voice Of The Tennessee Walking Horse 1969 September/October Voice RS | Page 79

( Continued from page 9 )
Vic Thompson in Shelbyville , Tennessee . The record now shows that this was a smart move for both men . They have made a great team and for the past two years the Thompson Stables have produced top winners in almost every category of Walking Horse competition . Now . . . after two years together . . . the team of Thompson and Wilson has won the biggest one of them all . The victory of EBONY ’ S SENATOR and Marvin Wilson has come none too soon for supporters of this trainer . They have followed his career over the years and have seen him " knock at the door ” many times
with great stock . He is worthy of the honor as trainer of the 1969 World Grand Champion and deserves all of the credit for making EBONY ’ S SENATOR the 1969 World Grand Champion . A top horse and a top trainer is a tough combination to beat , and they couldn ’ t do it this year .
Now considered permanent residents of Shelbyville , the Marvin Wilson family make their home there . Linda Wilson takes an interest in her husband ’ s activity as a trainer , and their three-year-old daughter ,
Janet , can often be seen around the stable watching her father work horses . We hope that every year will be as successful for them as 1969 has been .
VIC THOMPSON Little remains to be said about Vic Thompson . He has done it all in the Walking Horse business . From college in the pre-war days he came on strong as a young man in the Walking Horse field . He has personally produced and ridden as many winners as any trainer in the country and has won almost every title available at the Celebration , including the grand championship in 1957 . In recent years Mr . Thompson has concentrated on amateur and juvenile horses and his riders have won consistently for years , even with different trainers working under him .
Vic Thompson has been active in many areas of Walking Horse activity . He has worked hard for the trainers and breeders in areas of their business where he felt some improvements were needed . A lot of changes have taken place since Vic Thompson first got started as a professional trainer , and he has contributed greatly to the progress of the breed .
Among the many other top winners that Marvin Wilson has produced in the past few years for the Vic Thompson Stables are GOLDFINGER , 1969 World Champion Owner / Amateur Walking Gelding with Lindsey Apel riding ; MOONGLOW , JR ., three-time World Champion Amateur Horse with Burt Daugette riding ; ROCK-A-BYE LADY , 1969 World Champion Ladies Amateur Horse with Anne Daugette riding ; and UN TOUCHABLE , three-time World Champion Juvenile
Horse for owner-rider Judy Tillett . In addition to his Grand Championship Stake victory , Marvin Wilson also took home the blue this year with DELIGHT ’ S PERFECTION in the Junior Gelding Class .
O . D . " PECK ” CARLTON
It was news indeed when word came that EBONY ’ S SENATOR was no longer owned by Lloyd Wood of Tuscaloosa , Alabama . His new ’ owner , O . D . " Peck ”
Carlton of Albany , Georgia , is no newcomer to the ranks of well-known owners of top Tennessee Walking Horses . Mr . and Mrs . Carlton and their daughters , Connie , Colleen and Kay , have been Walking Horse enthusiasts for almost twenty years . Although the girls never showed horses much as youngsters , they love the breed and have followed their father ’ s activity with much interest . Among the better show horses that Mr . Carlton has owned are GO BOY ’ S WONDER and UNTOUCHABLE , the great show mare that Judy Tillett has been showing for the past several years . In discussing their horses , Mrs . Carlton said , " Don ’ t forget BEECH WOOD ACE . He was our first Walking Horse .” We hope that EBONY ’ S SENATOR won ' t be their last , as it is people such as the Carltons that make this business what it is today .

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD ?
At present the future of EBONY ’ S SENATOR is uncertain . Tentative plans call for him to be retired at the Dixie Jubilee Horse Show in Baton Rouge , November 6-9 , but this has not been finalized as of this writing . After that , he will probably take his place beside RODGERS PERFECTION at Stallion Stables and stand the 1970 season there as a breeding horse , although this has not been established .
