TABULATION OF CELEBRATION RESULTS
Tabulating the results for the third year , the VOICE finds twenty-two training stables winning blue ribbons at the 1969 Celebration . In 1967 and 1968 there were only fourteen each year . There were just four repeats from last year , the rest being entirely different trainers . These are the results from the saddle class division , with the amateur and juvenile class winners listed under the stable from w ’ hich they ride .
Results were as follows : Vic Thompson — Marvin Wilson ............ 7 C . A . Bobo & Sons .................................... 6 Buddy Black ............................................... 2 Wallace Brandon ....................................... 2 Mack Motes ................................................ 2 Donald Paschal ......................................... 2 Chalmus Davenport ................................. 1 Neal Branscum ......................................... 1 Jimmy Holloway ....................................... 1 Albert Rowland ......................................... 1 Dude Prestwood ........................................ 1 Bob Cherry ................................................. 1 Doug Wolaver ............................................ 1 John T . Carter ........................................... 1 Bud Seaton .................................................. 1 Preach Fleming ......................................... 1 Gary Edwards ............................................ 1 Richard Pate .............................................. 1 Bill Sledge ................................................... 1 Jimmy Hicks .............................................. 1 Shorty Thomas ........................................... 1 Huck Moss .................................................. 1 This year there were entries from twenty-five states . The owners took ribbons back to twenty-two states — Alabama , Arkansas , California , Florida , Georgia , Illinois , Indiana , Kentucky , Louisiana , Maryland , Michigan , Mississippi , Missouri , New Hampshire , New York , North Carolina , Ohio , Oklahoma , South Carolina , Tennessee , Texas , and Virginia .
Blue ribbons went to Kentucky , Georgia , Tennessee , Mississippi , Alabama , Ohio , Louisiana , North Carolina , Florida , Texas and South Carolina . There were eight states winning blues last year as compared to the above . The trainers were from Tennessee , Mississippi , Ohio , Florida , Georgia , Alabama and South Carolina . Tabulations of Celebration records are always interesting , as they quite often reflect the trends in the Walking Horse business . We are proud of the 1969 show as it appears that all records , receipts and entries exceeded just about all previous tabulations . There were 1779 horses entered this year with a total of 2189 class entries ( this includes horses that showed in both qualifying classes and stake classes ). There were 37 blue ribbons in Walking Horse classes , 8 blues in colt classes , 19 blues in Gaited Horse classes and one in equitation — a total of 65 classes . As the VOICE has stated before , " any ribbon from the Celebration ” is something to be regarded with great pride . There were 505 ribbons allotted this year , with a
total of $ 38,660 in prize money . Entries paid a total of over 557,000 .
If we use the Celebration as a guideline for rating the progress of the Walking Horse business , we are in pretty good shape ... so don ’ t let all that bad publicity bother you too much !
NORTH CAROLINA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP HORSE SHOW CONSIDERED " OUTSTANDING ”
by Carolyn Elliott
Tennessee ’ s Emmet Guy joined forces with North Carolina ’ s " Bill ” Dillon to produce another outstanding North Carolina State Championship Horse Show . This four-day event , held September 17-20 , attracted 127 Walking Horse entries . Highlight for the Walking Horse enthusiasts was the Championship Stake held on Saturday night . All seven entries hit the ring in top form to work before Judge Richard Mary of Baton Rouge , Louisiana . SIR HEN RY ’ S HEIR , shown by Kenny Price for Mutual Investors , just kept getting better and better , despite the length of the class , and it was no surprise when he was named the 1969 North Carolina State Champion . Reserve honors went to the winner of the preliminary Walking Mare Class , DAT ’ S-DE-BABE , shown by C . A . Bobo for Bill Tomlinson of North Wilkesboro . Tying in third place was MIKE ’ S GO BOY , with Jerry Derryberry up for Browning Stables , Chapel Hill .
In the large Amateur Stallion & Gelding Class , spectators were treated to a real " battle for the blue ” as Kim Lovette and her 1969 World Champion Juvenile Horse , HILL ’ S PERFECTION , tied over Pam Reed and her former World Champion Pony , MIKE ’ S MIGHTY MAN . These two gave an exciting repeat performance to tie in the same order in the Amateur Stake .
KENNIS SUN BEAM and young Tommy Carter of Kingsport , Tennessee were awarded the blue in a class of 15 outstanding juvenile entries . Reserve honors went to the popular CAPTAIN APPLEJACK , shown by Betty Blount of Bethel .
The North Carolina State Championship Show always attracts some of the top horses in the nation and in this category was DELIGHT ’ S ADONIS , the 1969 Reserve World Champion Two-Year-Old . This handsome young stud gave a top performance with John T . Carter in the saddle to win the blue in a Fine class of eleven two-year-olds . In second place was SPIRIT ’ S CAVALIER , shown by Doodie Power for Stanley Bowles of Martinsville , Virginia . SPECIAL SONATA with owner / rider Mrs . Ed Hubbard of Sanford chalked up two blues with outstanding performances in both the Amateur Mare Class and the Ladies Class .
