The call to battle for the Three-Year-Old Championship was answered by 27 entries and the judges cut this group to 13 for the final judging . Making a powerful show and capturing the votes of both judges was Mack Motes and SHADOW ’ S ROYAL FLUSH . This big-lick black stallion has improved steadily since his showring career began and if he continues to improve he will be near-impossible to beat in the years ahead . Albert Rowland and MISTER REE did not go down to defeat easily as they pressed Mack and his horse from the beginning . Preach Fleming gave his supporters something to cheer about : a consistent performance on SUNDUST JAMBOREE .

HILI / S PERFECTION was just that - perfection — as he dominated this class to win the world championship and his second blue ribbon of the Celebration . Kim Lovette put on a masterful riding exhibition , keeping her horse on the rail and avoiding the always-present opportunity to race . The reserve award on a strong show went to Gregg Gochneaur and GREGG ’ S PERFECTION . This young man had his horse just right and narrowly missed scoring one of the biggest upsets in years . Judy Tillette and UNTOUCHABLE lost the crown they had held for three years and finished third . Judy proved to be as much of a good sport in finishing third as she had been as a popular and hard-working champion .

HANDSHAKER ’ S DELIGHT and Donald Paschal
proved to be the delight of the judges and the crowd as this high-powered team walked their way to the victory circle with an extremely impressive show . This horse gives indications of being one of the all-time great horses of the breed , and the crowd of 19,162 cheered his greatness on this night . The reserve junior championship went to REFLECTION ’ S SHADOW and Joe Martin , a strong finish guaranteeing their high placement . This horse was tied second on all three cards . The third-place honors were won by Sam Paschal and GO BOY ' S BLACK ROOSTER .
