14th 148 COLTS SOLD DURING THREE-DAY SALE Marlinsdale Sale TOP’ PRICED COLT - Randall Rollins (right) and his trainer, Tommy Howell (left), look at their new filly, SPIRIT'S HOT SHOT, after buying her for Despite all the adverse publicity that the breed has been receiving of late, there were still plenty of buy ers interested in colts in Middle Tennessee during the Celebration. Many of these buyers made their way over to Franklin and the Harlinsdale Farm to see what this well-established breeding operation had to offer during their 14th annual three-day auction, Sep tember 3, 4, and 5. They obviously liked what they saw because the three-day sale saw 148 yearling colts change hands with the total price tag being 8188,825. The average price per colt for this year’s sale was about the same as last year, reaching the SI,277 mark. This price in dicates the high quality of colt that was put in the sale and the selectivity used in making the selections. All colts in the sale were sired by the stallions standing at the Harlinsdale Farm. These include SUN’S DELIGHT, SPIRIT OFMIDNIGHT,SUN’S MIDNIGHT DUKE, MIDNIGHT MACK K and MIDNIGHT BEAU. All of these breeding horses are direct sons of the famous MIDNIGHT SUN who stood for many years at the Harlinsdale Farm. The well-marked and attract ive grave site of MIDNIGHT SUN at the farm was a favorite stopping-place for visitors at the sale, and many fond memories of this horse were no doubt re called during the event. The highesUpriced colt at the sale was a black stal lion named SPIRIT’S HOT SHOT, owned by Billy Maddox of Duck River, Tennessee. The colt was pur chased by Randall Rollins of Sugarloaf Farm in At lanta for $6,000. The colt was sired by SPIRIT OF MIDNIGHT and was out of BIG SHOT’S DREAM by SUN’S BIG SHOT. The second highesUpriced colt was DELIGHT’S DIRECTOR, sold for $4,500 to Tom Youree of Mount Juliet, Tennessee by Harlin Hayes. This colt is by SUN’S DELIGHT out of SUN’S ELK- HORN BEAUTY by MIDNIGHT SUN. John Peels of Mount Juliet paid $4,000 for DE LIGHT’S HOSTESS, a chestnut filly by SUN’S DE September/October, 1969 $6,000 to lop the Harlinsdale Sale. Another SUN’S DELIGHT colt brought a high price — DELIGHT'S BIG ROCK was sold to Jack Johnson of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina by Dr. James Ellis for S4,100. YV. W. Harlin expressed satisfaction with the results of this year’s sale. It is no easy chore putting on a sale during the Celebration, and the Harlinsdale Farm again came up with a first-class affair.
