MOONGLOW STABLES
Just on the edge of Barnwell , South Carolina , on Highway *= 3 , Boyd Melton is quite busy with his horses . Mr . and Mrs . Herbert Black , owners of the stable , and their children are becoming more and more involved with the Walking Horse business .
Chesley Black now has five colts " broke ” and coming along fine with the promise of making fine show horses .
MOONGLOW ’ S KNIGHT is going strong in the Juvenile Classes with several blues to his credit . He is owned by Miss Emily Jefferies of Barnwell .
In the Walking Pony Classes , RED MAN ’ S BONNY , owned by Nick Hess of Chattanooga , and nine-yearold Mary Jane Black are quite a pair to watch when the gate opens .
Some newcomers to the barn are : SPRINGTIME , a beautiful black mare ; GO BOY ’ S VARIETY ; and RODE ’ S PEARL , another mare owned by Variety Food Stores and D . B . Hammack of Augusta , Georgia . Another fine one is a two-year-old TRIPLE THREAT filly owned by Mr . and Mrs . Eugene Bolen of Williston , South Carolina .
In the Junior Class , Boyd is especially proud of EB ONY ’ S CHALLENGER , a black gelding owned by the Blacks .
An early visit to the barn some morning would find Boyd back in the pasture riding one of his impressive mounts . Boyd states that a combination of fine horses and fine owners vastly improves a trainer ’ s chances of success , and this is the combination he has found in Barnwell .
HAROLD FULKS STABLES
Harold Fulks of Killen , Alabama is working a barn full of horses and is ready for the shows . In alphabetical order , the list would begin with the black filly by MACK K ’ S HANDSHAKER that belongs to J .‘ R . Austin of Cloverdale . She will be ready for a show soon and she looks like she will have a big way of going and plenty of speed . Mr . Austin is also co-owner with Edwin Rinks of Florence of a great three-year-old SUN ’ S DELIGHT stallion with the appropriate name of WILD DELIGHT .
The Eugene Carbine family lost their Walking Pony , SUN ’ S GLORY BOY , in April . The boys will probably be showing the gelding , HAPPY ’ S COUNTRY BOY , in the juvenile classes this year .
Oscar Goins of Tuscumbia has a big , loose , long legged walking colt by TRIPLE THREAT at Harold ’ s
barn that will soon be a two-year-old to watch for in the ring . His name is TRIPLE THREAT ’ S TRADE MARK . He is bay but has four socks for markings . James H . Haygood and son Jim of Florence have
seven or eight horses in training with Harold , and most are exceptionally good ones . The Haygoods have
tried to find the best for Jim and Harold to show . Jim has already won the pony class at Hokes Bluff and second at Athens on GO BOY ’ S TUXEDO , the new black pony to watch . Jim won the blue and trophy at Athens in the Juvenile Class on MR . TWIST , a black horse with a great way of going when he gets going ( he really can move ). Harold has a two-year-old black filly , SUN ’ S MAGGIE E ., that is about the prettiest anywhere and has the gaits to match . Harold is about ready to bring out another black , a KEENE ’ S GO BOY stallion that is five years old and has never been shown . He has had injuries and problems with moving all over the country , but is beginning to reach his potential . The Haygoods seem to like black , but they do have a bay GO BOY pony that won third at Fayetteville in a class of more than 20 ponies . Harold also won third at Fayetteville in the stake class with about the same number of horses on a big chestnut gelding , MIDNIGHT STORY . This big horse could go
on and on , and gets better as he goes .
Wilson Kent owns a blue roan pony that will be shown by Danny Williams out of Harold ’ s stable this year . This good pony should win some ribbons .
Harold has been working HURRICANE BAY , a three-year-old MACK K ’ S HANDSHAKER horse , for Dr . Jack McIntyre . This colt has had the work of a two-year-old and probably won ’ t be shown until late in the season . A fine-looking bay stallion , he is worth waiting for as he promises to be something special .
A . H . Scott has a three-year-old HANDSHAKER bay mare , SHAKER BELLE , that was shown a few times last year . She tied first the the show in Muscle Shoals at the end of the season . She is a head-shaking mare with three good gaits and she ’ s ready to go to a show early this year .
