Helene Kahn ’ s Merrywood Farms of Redlands , California , Lonnie made a real " Celebration ” performance and greatly impressed Mr . Hughes with his showing .
The Aged Mare Class was won very convincingly by the popular Ray Rhoads on SUN DUST ’ S LACY , a top mare owned by Mrs . Jean P . McBurney . This beautiful chestnut has a lot of bloom and natural ability , and can go with the best in any competition . She topped a class of fourteen fine mares .
Amateur classes are perhaps the most hotly contested of any event on the West Coast , and this year
the winner was Dr . Carl R . Bishop riding MIDNIGHT GLORY B . in what many people termed " the best show of his career .” This fine black stallion is well known on the West Coast and has won his share of
top ribbons in both open and amateur competition under the expert handling of trainer Bob Campbell . The Juvenile Open Championship was won for the second year in a row by Sally Ward . She was riding DUST STORM , a fine horse with a lot of natural ability and action , and competed against some of the finest young riders in the country7 . The Wards were a " two-blue ” family , as Guy Ward captured the Junior Championship on REBEL ’ S APRIL ANGEL for Ward ’ s Walk-a-Way Ranch of Carlsbad , California . Their horses are trained by J . D . Landers . Another top contender that can go with the best anywhere is KISS-O-DAWN , a beautiful bay mare trained and ridden by Connie Osment for Mrs . Portia Osment She won the Ladies Championship on this fine mare and was third in the Championship Stake . We hear that they have plans to head to Tennessee sometime in July and groom this outstanding mare for competition for the World Championships . A lot of people feel that they have a good chance , if her performances in California are any indication .
In the Two-Year-Old Class , R . Mitchell McClure tied the blue on WONDER BOY II for his Courtesy Chevrolet Stables of Los Angeles . This fine young horse showed a lot of ability and was ridden in fine form by his owner-rider to defeat a good class of two-yearolds . Courtesy Chevrolet Stables won a total of five blue ribbons in both saddle and halter classes , and are pleased to be back in the business strong after a
brief slowdown of activity . The California-Bred Class saw some of the finest horses shown at the 1969 Celebration . Winning the blue was CELEBRATION KNIGHT , a big-lick black stallion owned by J . H . Woods and shown by Red Henson of Royal Crest Stables in Chino , California .
It is also rumored that Red Henson may make the trip east with this horse and TROOPER ’ S B-JOLLE . More on this later .
The status now being accorded the West Coast is attracting the interest of other Walking Horse enthusiasts , and we understand that next year several trainers and owners from this part of the country just might make the trip to California to show . It looks as if we are slowly " bridging the gap ” between East and West , and we could all profit from such activity . We missed seeing the horses from Blue Ridge Ranch show this year , but hear that trainer Glenn Miller and some of his owners covered the Southwest Circuit and some other shows . We also hear that they " made
believers out of some folks ” that a California trainer can indeed get along in top company . We hope to see more of them this next year .
There were two social events that highlighted the show this year . The annual exhibitors ’ cocktail party and luncheon was held at the new club on the show grounds and featured live entertainment and plenty to eat and drink . After the show on Saturday evening , the Walk-N-Nod Farms of Mr . and Mrs . Leon Durham hosted a barn party for exhibitors featuring the Prohibition * 69 singing group , of which their son Sandy is a member . Both events added greatly to everyone ’ s enjoyment of the 1969 California Walking Horse Celebration .
It was a great show and one that should lead to even bigger efforts in years to come . We would like to thank everyone who was so cordial to us during our visit to the Eest Coast , and we hope to come back next year . Complete results are found elsewhere in this issue .
