Lauderdale Stables was recently visited by one of the prominent Virginia trainers , Ernest Bugg of Lawnvale Farms , Haymarket . Ernest is presently working 12 horses . For Guy Simpson of Annandale he has a beautiful black stud by GO BOY ’ S JIM DANDY which he claims is one of the best he ’ s ever broken . DE LIGHT ’ S DELUSION , the good two-year-old that Ernest showed last year , is taking very well to the canter and is improving in his other gaits . Mr . Simpson also owns SILVER TEMPTATION , a five-year-old dapple-grey stud which Ernest hopes will be a top stake horse .
In the filly department is a real good little bay by MAJOR WILSON that is owned by John Ferguson , Denver , Colorado . For Miss Helen Riddle , Altoona , Pa ., Ernest has a coming three-year-old filly by a SUNDUST stud out of a MERRY BOY mare that sounds very exciting . Of course you all remember PIED PIPER ’ S HELLINA , that great little sorrel filly owned by Ernest and E . J . Whitlock . . . she ’ s cantering now and looks as though she ’ s going to make a great three-year-old .
The Amateur Division at Lawnvale will be headed by H . B . Johnson of Haymarket , who placed second in the state in 1968 on SOUVENIR ’ S FLASH .
On the local scene , our friends and neighbors , Mr . and Mrs . ( Ed & Red ) Bryant are well stocked with black studs . Ed has been a Walking Horse enthusiast for many years and Red , along with their four sons , shares his interest . At present they are the proud owners of a beautiful fourteen-month-old MERRY GO BOY black stud out of MIDNIGHT GLORY GIRL . The Bryants purchased this beautiful colt from C . C . Turner , Broadway , while at the Broadway show .
Another nice colt that Ed and Red have is a twoyear-old , JET AT KNIGHT , sired by Clarence Goodson ’ s good stake horse , SUN ’ S JET RETURN , and out of an OLD GLORY mare . This handsome , pacy black colt was purchased from Sheldon Epperly of Vinton and Cecil Firebaugh , two more local devotees of the breed .
DANDY ANDY ALLEN , a big-licking three-year-old by MIDNIGHT G out of a MIDNIGHT SUN mare , is Ed ’ s kind of horse . He ’ s close to 17 hands , has the bone structure to go with the height , and can really " go yonder ”!
One of our good friends , Dick Myer , trainer at Marwood Farms , Stuart ’ s Draft , came by the other day and we went to take a look at the stock of another neighbor , John Shiflett . Heading the list at John ’ s barn will once again be the popular GO BOY ’ S ES QUIRE , owned by John and O . R . Robinson of Buchanan . ESQUIRE has more speed and front end that he did as a two-year-old and he ’ s taking the canter just fine . O . R . has a great little filly by EBONY MAS TERPIECE and out of a MACK K mare that is really a walking piece of machinery . DOLLY , as they call her , really keeps that back end up under her and gets out with the front end . . . and can she come up ! O . R . may show this little gal himself .
John also has a beautiful black filly that he purchased in Alabama last summer and just broke in the fall . Unless I miss my guess she ’ ll make a SHOW mare . She ’ s just as cocky as you could want and has a real pop eye on her and the spirit to go with it . With her loose , free way-of-going and the guts she ’ s got , she ’ ll make a top colt !
Dick is working eight two-year-olds and , unless I ’ ve heard wrong , has been joined by Everett Majors of Brookneal . Everett has a black stud colt he is really excited about . Everett says SUNDUST WAR EAGLE , owned by James Bailey of Brookneal , is the best colt he has ever started and is walking a hole in the ground !
For Carlton Elder of Roanoke Everett has a MAJOR WILSON stud colt that was broken too late to show as a two-year-old , but will make a " booger ” this year . Robert Marshall of Brookneal has a MAJOR WILSON five-year-old with Everett that they say looks just like his old daddy and goes just like him , too . Robert also has a two-year-old stud , same breeding , that is just as loose as he can be and looks like he ’ ll make a good ' un !
Kyle Knott of Brookneal has a sorrel two-year-old stud , FLAMING STAR by MAJOR WILSON out of a WILSON ALLEN mare , that is doing real good .
Eddie Parson of Lynchburg has returned from his tour of duty in the service and is presently working four horses . Good luck to you , Eddie , and also to the new team of Dick Myers and Everett Majors at Marwood Farms in Stuart ’ s Draft .
