with the big "cher-umb, cher-umb”
of the big bullfrogs in the lilies along
the river bank.
Mary and Betty were usually early
risers. They had the bacon and eggs
frying and the coffee perking before
Bev and I had our feet on the
ground. The aroma of the bacon
and coffee whetted our appetites and
I must confess we ate as it it was
"going out of style"!
One of the nicest things that hap­
pened to us on our trip was getting
acquainted with Mr. and Mrs. Oscar
Cook, who own one of the small
farms in the river valley. Mr. Cook
is a retired forester and he spent
his entire service in this area. The
Cooks gave us the use of their farm
bam for our horses at night. Mr.
Cook advised us on some of our
most interesting trail rides. He said,
"If you will come back in October
when the autumn leaves are in full
color, I’ll have OLE BLACKIE shod
and will personally guide you on
some of the more secluded trails."
Minutes soon turned into hours
and hours into days. All too soon,
it was time to pack our gear, load
our horses, and head back to our
"Little 3 Ranch." We reached home
relaxed, refreshed, and with a lot
of pleasant memories and a keen
desire to return with our horses to
the clear cool waters and shady
trails on the upper waters of Black
River.
