that were unique . In one class , a rider jumped the rail as another climbed in the saddle to continue the class . It appears that the " firststring " rider was late getting to the showgrounds , and his assistant went on in the class . When he arrived , they waited for an opportune moment and swapped riders without detection by management . Another interesting event was the late appearance of two horses entered in the aged stallion preliminary . The class of 29 horses was on the reverse when two exhibitors were finally admitted . They had been " locked out ” when the big outside doors were closed to ward off the cold . By the time word reached the center of the ring , the class was half-way through the first workout . The decision of the management was that it was not the fault of the exhibitors that they were late , so they were permitted to work separately and qualify for the workout . One of the horses , ACE ’ S SENSATION , won the class .
There were several added attractions at the 1969 show , including the heralded " Chaplain of Bourbon Street ,” Rev . Bob Harrington . He appeared nightly and made a brief talk that captured the attention of the horse show crowd .
Montgomery is traditionally the finale of the show season and this year ' s show ended the season on a strong note . The loyal support of Alabama horsemen combined with the influx of top horses from all across the Southeast made the 1969 Southern Championship a true championship horse show .
